About
FROM SHARECROPPER TO MULTIMILLIONAIRE
In this captivating and masterfully crafted book, a remarkable story unfolds, told by those who experienced it firsthand. It chronicles a family who ascended from the struggles of generational sharecropping to achieve a level of wealth that is rare among African American families in this country. During the Great Migration, this family migrated from Texas to New England, eventually settling in historical Boston, Massachusetts, and rising to the rank of real estate magnate.

The Story
The story of grit, faith, and love that only culminates in the twenty-first century. A example of endurance, sacrifice and tenacity for readers who face similar challenges. The narrative weaves together personal memories, oral histories, and historical context to illuminate how determination, strategic risk-taking, and community support shaped their journey. Against the backdrop of segregation, economic exclusion, and shifting social landscapes, the family-built businesses, acquired property, and invested in future generations.
Ruling: In May of 2017, the Court of Appeals found that the trusts were valid and that the named heirs were the rightful legatees. “The beneficiaries shall be Lorenzo Pitts Jr. and Robert Pitts, in equal shares.” The case was remanded to the trial judge to issue the rescript. Months passed. No action was taken. No rescript was issued. Eventually, the heirs brought action against the judge and his superiors for “dereliction of duty”.

“A Proud Moment”
African Americans rarely have the opportunity to keep their land and property away from gentrification or government acquisition. This is a wonderful story of the fight that must go on and preserve their cultural heritage. The struggle to maintain ownership of land and property is a testament to the resilience and determination of African Americans in the face of systemic challenges.

I recently discovered a TikTok entitled Boston’s hidden treasures. As a lifelong Bostonian, I was delighted to read about various stories which illuminated many unheralded heroes in Boston’s colorful history. This story “From Sharecropper to Multimillionaire” belongs there as well. There are lessons to be learned and shared because of Mr. Pitts’ determination to succeed in order to continue generational wealth as his legacy.
